T-Mobile launch Android challenge to popular iPhone

BEIJING, July 9 (Xinhuanet) -- Deutsche Telekom subsidiary T-Mobile has announced the launch of a second Google Android mobile phone which it hopes will challenge the well established Apple iPhone.

Officially launched on Wednesday, the MyTouch 3G is described by the company as being a 鈥減owerful device that is 100 percent you.鈥?

The MyTouch 3G is similar to the G1 launched last year, but is slimmer and does not possess a physical keyboard. The new device also has built in Microsoft Exchange support in addition to the Google Android 1.5 operating system.

There are currently 5,000 Android apps available for the device, though this falls well below the some 50,000 apps available for the Apple iPhone. Nevertheless T-Mobile hopes the device will provide a strong challenge to the iPhone. 鈥淢y hope and expectation is that this device will be compared to the iPhone,鈥?said Denny Post, senior vice president and chief marketing officer at T-Mobile USA.

The MyTouch 3G will be available for existing T-Mobile customers to pre-order for 199.99 U.S. dollars with a two-year contract extension. Pre-ordered devices will ship starting July 28, and the MyTouch 3G will become publicly available around August 5th, T-Mobile says.
