Singapore launches innovative initiative to boost firms' IT capabilities

SINGAPORE, July 14 (Xinhua) -- Singapore launched on Tuesday an innovative tie-up between private and public sector to boost local companies' information technology (IT) capabilities.

Named the SingTel Innovation Exchange, it is a joint initiative between SingTel, the country's largest telecommunication company and government agencies, Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) and International Enterprise Singapore (IE Singapore).

The initiative aims to provide a platform for large and small information and communication technologies (ICT) firms working in partnership for common good.

"Smaller infocomm companies could increase their export reach by piggy-backing on larger companies' market access. Conversely, larger companies can tap on smaller firms' innovations and quick responses to meet end markets' demands," said Lee Yi Shyan, Singapore's Minister of State for Trade and Industry and Manpower at the launch of the initiative.

Lee cited it as an example of private-public sector partnership. "IE Singapore would identify and match promising Singapore-based software companies with potential partners and customers overseas using the Exchange, whereas IDA helps in the incubation of infocomm companies locally," he said.

Lee also said that the infocomm sector is a key contributor to the Singapore economy. Last year, revenue for the infocomm industry grew 12.4 percent to 58.1 billion Singapore dollars (about 39.8 billion U.S. dollars).
