Facebook users hit 250 million mark

SAN FRANCISCO, July 15 (Xinhua) -- Facebook, already the world's biggest social networking website, announced on Wednesday that it now has 250 million active users, an increase of 50 million in about three months.

"The 250 million of you on Facebook today are what gives Facebook life and makes the site meaningful to everyone using it," Mark Zuckerberg, co-founder and chief executive officer of Facebook, wrote in a blog posting.

At the beginning of April, Zuckerberg said Facebook hit 200 million active users worldwide. The website had just 150 million users back in January.

"The rapid pace of our growth is humbling and exciting for us, and it affirms that people everywhere are realizing the power of staying connected to everything they care about on Facebook," Zuckerberg said in the blog posting.

"For us, growing to 250 million users isn't just an impressive number, it is a mark of how many personal connections all of you have made, and how far we at Facebook have to go to extend the power of connection to the billions of people around the world," he added.

Founded in February 2004, Facebook is now a privately held company and is headquartered in Palo Alto, California.

It was reported earlier this week that Digital Sky Technologies, a Russian investment company, agreed to pay 14.77 U.S. dollars a share for Facebook common stock, valuing the social networking website at about 6.5 billion dollars.
