Google announces hardware makers for Chrome OS

BEIJING, July 10 (Xinhuanet) -- Google has announced several hardware manufacturers who have expressed interest in building machines on which its new Google Chrome operating system will run. Among the companies it has named are Acer, Asus, Freescale, Hewlett-Packard, Lenovo, and Toshiba.

The Google Chrome OS software is designed to work with the Internet and the company has said it will first appear on smaller portable computers known as netbooks. The devices with the pre-installed software are likely to be made available in mid-2010. The software would also be available free to download.

The operating system will be designed to work with Intel chips that appear in the vast majority of desktop personal computers, laptops and netbooks as well as the Arm chips that power most of the world's mobile phones. Texas Instruments and Qualcomm, who both build devices based around Arm chips, were also unveiled as partners on the Chrome OS project.

Google has also said it is working with Adobe on the operating system. This is significant due to the wide use of Adobe's Flash software much used on many websites.
