Prisa to put El Pais reports on Amazon's Kindle

Spanish media giant Prisa, owner of leading daily El Pais, has reached an agreement with Amazon.com to distribute content on the US firm's Kindle electronic reader, El Pais said on Wednesday.

Under the terms of the deal, Kindle users will be able to download and read articles from the Spanish-language daily as well as Prisa's sports newspaper AS and its business daily Cinco Dias, after paying a subscription, it said.

"Prisa in this way becomes one of the pioneering media groups to distribute its content in this fashion," the company said in a statement.

In May, Amazon launched a bigger, updated version of Kindle, which may also house textbooks. Many media executives believe it will boost a newspaper industry badly hit by falling advertising revenue and declining readership.

About 50 publications are so far available on the Kindle, which made its debut in 2007.

Prisa reported a near 69 percent drop in first-half net profit to 27.1 million euros (38.5 million dollars) last week as the global economic slump continued to bite.

Advertising revenue along fell 25.2 percent from a year earlier to 450.1 million euros.

Prisa also has interests in radio and television in Spain as well as holdings in Latin America and a small stake in Le Monde, widely regarded as the main newspaper of record in France.
